Stertil Stokvis has completed a dock leveller repair after a customer's insurance inspection identified several defects affecting the condition and safety of the equipment.
After reviewing the inspection report, Stertil Stokvis carried out a site survey and recommended repairs to restore the dock leveller to a safe and reliable condition.
Inspection Highlights Key Defects
The inspection identified several issues that required attention, including:
- Heavy corrosion to the front lower structure of the dock leveller
- Worn anti-slip surfaces on the deck and lip
- A damaged weld on the left-hand bump stop
Detailed measurements were taken to enable a replacement front lower beam to be manufactured for the dock leveller. Risk assessments and method statements were then prepared and approved before work began.
Repairs Completed
Engineers first cleared debris from the dock pit before beginning the repair works.
The corroded front lower section was then removed and replaced with a newly fabricated unit, while the damaged bump stop was repaired.
To address the worn deck surface, the dock leveller was cleaned and prepared before a new R12-rated anti-slip coating was applied to both the deck and lip.
A 150mm yellow safety stripe was also added to the lip to provide a clear visual guide for loading bay operators – helping ensure a sufficient lip overlap remains inside the docked vehicle during loading and unloading.
Once the repair was complete, the dock leveller received a full service and operational check before being returned to use.
Extending Equipment Life
By addressing the defects identified during the inspection, the customer was able to restore the dock leveller to a safe and reliable condition without the need for full replacement.
Geoff Evans, Service Manager at Stertil Stokvis, commented:
"Many defects identified during inspections can be resolved through targeted repairs and refurbishment works. This approach can help improve safety, extend equipment life and avoid the cost and disruption of full replacement."
